Zadar is the capital of the eponymous province of Croatia and the main city of northern Dalmatia, located in the central part of the Adriatic coast. Zadar – the fifth largest city in Croatia with a population of more than 80 thousand people. The history of Zadar goes back several thousand years, and bears traces of different cultures and civilizations including the Byzantine Empire. Today in Zadar you can see the ruins of the ancient Roman Forum and the city gates as a Roman triumphal arch, Byzantine and Romanesque churches, the Gothic Franciscan monastery and the buildings of the Renaissance. But perhaps the most surprising sight of Zadar appeared quite recently in 2005 is the “Morske orgulj” or “sea organ” which generate surprisingly harmonious music created by waves and wind, attracting many tourists who come listen to the sounds.
The coastline of the Adriatic near Zadar is the most rugged and impressive in Croatia. Numerous islands off the coast of Zadar are connected with the city by regular ferry lines. A total of 365 islands make up the Zadar archipelago. You can see wild cliffs falling steeply to the sea, tiny bays and coves, caves, waterfalls and cliffs and this region is popular with divers, cavers and rock climbers.
Near Zadar are several nature parks. Park Telashchitsa known salt lake Mir, where the water is warmer than the surrounding sea and rocky coastline, where many birds nest. The Park Paklenica can see scenic canyons of mountain rivers and karst caves. Vranskoe Lake Park (crow lake) – the largest natural lake in Croatia, where the reed thickets breeds a great variety of birds, it is one of the most important bird reserves in Europe.
