Croatian Property Investors Disheartened by EU Roadblock
Croatia property became an overseas property hotspot in the mid-noughties when it was expected to achieve EU accession by 2008. Given the massive growth seen in property values in Estonia and Poland upon their entry into the EU, understandably investors wanted to ride the wave to the next success story. The dream was punctured in 2008 when neighbouring country and EU Member Slovenia blocked Croatia's accession process on the grounds that the latter may agree to something that is prejudicial to their long-standing border row. Needless to say this made a lot of investors very unhappy that their Croatian property investment would not return what they had hoped.Croatian Property set for Growth With EU Accession Back on Track
Thank fully Croatia's EU accession process was successfully re-railed last year, when the country signed formal documents stating that it would not agree anything during its accession proceedings that could be perceived as prejudicial to the final settlement of their border dispute. Croatia is expected to complete its EU negotiations in the first half of this year. It will then sign the accession treaty, before holding a referendum on accession deciding whether or not to ratify the treaty. Croatian property prices had already grown in advance of EU membership, and popular opinion tells us that prices haven't fallen as hard as they have in most places. That said; if you know where to look you can still bag a bargain property in Croatia.
